What is meditation for?

Here is a simple way to understand the benefits of meditation. I bought a new car recently. When I took it for a test drive it pulled to the left. The garage happily balanced the wheels and adjusted the tracking. The car now drives straight if I take my hands off the wheel on a level road, (not a recommendation!)

Meditation and science

Meditation and Science have been chatting over the fence since the 1930s when it was the extraordinary abilities of certain yogic practitioners that attracted scientific research to explain or debunk. Later in the 1960s the brain waves of Zen monks were studied and changes in brainwaves of experienced meditators were recorded.

The first is the idea that illness is a result of ‘negativity’, unreleased issues, and / or ‘bad karma'. The second idea is that illness is something, ‘wrong’ and that we have a ‘right’ to a pain free, wonderful life... click here to read more

Meditation and depression

We try so hard and hope for so much for our lives. Sooner or later reality happens to our plans.

Often we just pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and carry on. Perhaps we become more determined, set goals, get even more flexible and resourceful and find another way to our desired outcome.

Sometimes we don't, and this is when 'living hurts'... click here to read more

Types of meditation

There may be many types of meditation, but meditation in context is a series of mental exercises practised within an overall spiritual training and aimed at reaching learnings and perceptions valued by a particular tradition.

In the West we use the term, ‘meditation’ to cover a variety of approaches that are perceived as distinct in their native settings. Meditation in the west has also expanded to be a part of psychological / psychotherapeutic modalities that are aimed at improving well being in this world rather than escaping from it!

There are some traditional distinctions between types of meditation such as the distinction between concentration and awareness practices. I am not sure these divisions are very useful today... click here to read more
