About me Richard Ingate

Richard Ingate emerged out of being a confused teenager in the middle 1970s having been impressed by the tv show 'Kung Fu', as were many of his generation. He took it quite seriously and learned that the mystical stuff in the temple was Buddhism.

He was at the right time and in the right place to study Buddhism for his undergraduate degree and has been practising ever since.

Along the way Richard developed an interest in NLP and hypnosis and went on to train in both before it was quite as fashionable. He ran a small practice in a Natural Health Centre in Sussex, for a couple of years.

Arriving at one of those crossroads in life, Richard gave it up to go and train with the martial arts 'masters' over in Malaysia. He learned somewhat quickly that not all Chinese are enlightened martial arts masters! As Michael Grinder once wrote, 'I claim the right to be a slow learner!'

Failing to assimilate into a new culture and environment Richard left Malaysia. This was the less than wonderful side of culture shock in action...

So it was back to Blighty and more English teaching than you could shake a stick at, to earn a few pennies.

The lure of Malaysia, sans martial arts, was too strong and Richard returned to teach English in Kuala Lumpur and went on to meet and make friends with one of the teachers and organisers of an Amitabha Buddhist Society in the capital. This approach became a major influence on Richard at the time and he went on to write The Chinese Secret as a formulation of what he learned during this period.

Alas, back to the UK to do some filial piety training! Richard is now languishing in the UK, far from a source of good food, (this comment does not include his wife's cooking, of course), building this website, teaching English and plotting his return to Malaysia, and... that's about it for 'about me'.
